I remember being one of those few who actually headed out to the cinema to see it when it came out &#8211; (not in 3D.) From the opening of the 2012 film Dredd, the viewer is given some short exposition before being flung into this dystopian world of cutthroat Law vs cutthroat Crime. I had been a fan of the 2000 AD comics when I was a kid and I used to like the old 1995 Judge Dredd film staring Sylvester Stallone. Admittedly, the 1995 film portrayed Dredd as an almost invincible super-hero and really gave Dredd a human face, which the comics never did. And neither does Dredd 2012, &#8211; (AKA, Dredd 3D, but I&#8217;m not calling it that because it sucks).<\/p>\n<p>Written by the wonderfully talented Alex Garland and directed by visual genius Pete Travis, Dredd 2012 was a film set to relaunch the Dredd universe and get people into the cinemas seats again for the whole 3D gimmick. Personally, I never really liked 3D cinema. I&#8217;d seen Avatar, visually stunning but very long &#8211; too long to be wearing 3D glasses in my opinion. Dredd&#8217;s runtime is significantly shorter but the movie had a great concept to give people something visually pleasing in 3D while maintaining a story that didn&#8217;t shoehorn this visual appeal. A new synthetic drug called Slo-Mo, giving the user a sense of slowed down time. This made for some visually beautiful scenes even without the use of 3D.<\/p>\n<p>What Dredd 2012 offered was a crime ridden infestation of some 80 million citizens <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/s14-eu5.startpage.com\/cgi-bin\/serveimage?url=https%3A%2F%2Fi.imgur.com%2FiykZ0xh.gif&amp;sp=3ebeca6bae96fd4cd3d5970e626fb08e\" alt=\"I just saw Dredd 2012 on NetFlix the other day. How could there ...\" data-image-result-overlay-image=\"\" data-src-fallback=\"https:\/\/s14-eu5.startpage.com\/cgi-bin\/serveimage?url=http%3A%2F%2Ft0.gstatic.com%2Fimages%3Fq%3Dtbn%3AANd9GcRwVeOGuorsRmrv2ld38wGXZF_l8fusL9bgzvuk8xtg9U28qeLX&amp;sp=25e49822cf86391bdcc5d1eddafbf851&amp;anticache=960708\" \/>called Mega-City One, home to the Judges who police this anarchic and chaotic backdrop. It offers elements of dingy cyberpunk spaces and huge towering archologies. It&#8217;s a rip-raw gun-blazing beat-for-beat action-flick with some of the most interesting and high-violent displays I&#8217;ve seen, using moments of gunman dosing on Slo-Mo and bringing us, the viewers, into their visual world as they observe bloody and gory shoot-outs. Judge Dredd, (played by Karl Urban) is assigned a rookie, Cassandra Anderson (Olivia Thirlby), with a unique special ability &#8211; she&#8217;s a powerful psychic. The plot follows Dredd to one of the arcology projects housing over 60, thousand people, to investigate a multiple homicide. What they don&#8217;t realize is this place is now run by Ma Ma (portrayed amazingly by Lena Headey), a notorious gangster fueled with the same quiet rage as Dredd, and an ambition for her own brand of law and order. Ma Ma locks down the arcology with Dredd and his partner trapped inside, with no back-up and a countless onslaught of gangs and fearful gang affiliates. With Dredd and Anderson dragging one of the criminal perps along the way, they have to survive this hell in an action-packed and surprisingly good film.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 640px;\" class=\"wp-video\"><video class=\"wp-video-shortcode\" id=\"video-561-1\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" preload=\"metadata\" controls=\"controls\"><source type=\"video\/webm\" src=\"https:\/\/denverharrington.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/ColdNervousEastsiberianlaika.webm?_=1\" \/><a href=\"https:\/\/denverharrington.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/ColdNervousEastsiberianlaika.webm\">https:\/\/denverharrington.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/ColdNervousEastsiberianlaika.webm<\/a><\/video><\/div>\n<p>I was originally cynical about Dredd 2012, I hadn&#8217;t at the time thought it would stand up well. It seemed like a largely unheard of and underwhelming release. Dredd was always perceived as a big thing, so when a movie comes out about Dredd,\u00a0 would have expected a lot more hype than the whole 3D angle. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cinemablend.com\/new\/Why-Dredd-Was-Flop-According-Karl-Urban-132577.html\">Even Karl Urban has gone on recording claiming the film was a flop due to marketing problems<\/a>. And he&#8217;s not wrong. The film was rated R, and had difficulty landing the right demographics in some sense. People weren&#8217;t sure if the film was a sequel, a re-boot, a one-time film or even if it would represent anything the comics stood for. In my opinion it totally did. Sure, there were marketing problems, but the script understood the character. He remained masked, mysterious, legendary. The risks and stakes kept rising, introducing Dredd to deadlier challenges, even at one point almost killing him. Dredd is not a super-hero, he can die, he has no special powers other than his training and brute force, and the film does well to uphold this.<\/p>\n<p>The pitch for 3D was an effort, but this was already a gimmick that was tired before it began. It seemed everything was going 3D &#8211; and it was almost forcing an audience to embrace something nobody had asked for, simply to fill seats. At least, that was my impression of the 3D film wave.<\/p>\n<p>Dredd failed at the box office, but it wasn&#8217;t a bad film. There&#8217;s a theory that the public lacks an appetite for violent films but, if Deadpool&#8217;s ratings have anything to go by, I would have to disagree! Deadpool is a superhero with a cynical-comedy edge, also r-rated and ultra-violent. It did well because it was marketed well and it knew how to land its audience. Despite all this, as a Dredd fan, I&#8217;m glad the cast and crew were able to produce a thrilling, visually exciting and colourful take on a classic comic character&#8217;s story, representing the world as it is without leading us on any long-winded expositions. Despite it being lambasted by few, Dredd 2012 is what it is, it&#8217;s gained a cult following over the years and I&#8217;m glad to say I&#8217;m among those few who like it.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I recently saw Dredd 2012 on TV and forgot how much I enjoy this film.
