On October 23rd, Tucker Carlson gave a speech in Arizona. He said:”-Dad comes home. And he’s pissed.” <\/em>As a result, a celebration of cheers and whoops followed. Some might wonder ‘how can that be?’<\/em> In a less civilised age, this might be understandable, maybe even expected. But aren’t these attitudes supposed to be from a bygone time in history?<\/p>\n

As it happens, that’s not how brains work.<\/p>\n

“Dad Comes Home. And he’s pissed.”<\/h2>\n

When Tucker said “Dad comes home. And he’s pissed,”<\/em> he targeted a deep and specific cognitive structure in people’s brains. In conceptual metaphor theory (CMT) this metaphorical model is the strict father <\/em>metaphor<\/a>.<\/p>\n

An angry father of this sort is likely to dish out punishment. When Tucker made his remark, the crowd were not cheering to be punished. On the contrary. In the logic of this moral framework, the crowd view themselves as good\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0obedient\u00a0<\/em>children. They are loyal followers, disciplined and wronged by the Woke agenda<\/em> and the Loonie <\/em>Left. In other words, <\/em>they are cheering for is their daddy to punish\u00a0<\/em>the woke liberals. Trump has made loud assertions about using State military assets to go after his political rivals<\/a>. The question is, how did the Democrats underestimate this threat again?<\/p>\n

The Strict Father Model – Under your nose the whole time<\/h2>\n

American culture is littered with examples of strict father role models. Think Mike Brady in The Brady Bunch,\u00a0<\/em>George Jefferson in\u00a0The Jeffersons, <\/em>Philip Drummond in Diff’Rent Strokes, or <\/em>George Papadapolis in Webster – <\/em>the list goes on.<\/p>\n

In politics, we might think of the strict father as someone like Ronald Reagan, who often played the strict father figure. His characters were were firm with women and expressing tough love on kids. American culture frames these figures because, to borrow the famous epitaph from neuroscience, neurons that fire together, wire together. <\/em>Moreover, each time we encounter a strict father framing, the stronger we internalise it. This is the magic Tucker Carlson was evoking in his address to Arizona, a tool in the long culture war campaign. The Democrats don’t see it because they too operate on a softer version of this internalised structure.<\/p>\n

The Strict Father Ideal<\/h2>\n

The process of thought is mostly unconscious and takes place below our perception. We all have this authoritarian structure in our mind, which is why we are able to understand and discuss it. This worldview frames reality as a tough and dangerous place, filled with pitfalls. To survive it, you must be morally strong and you must have strong values in place. For the strict father, that means experiencing hard times. Your ‘suffering’<\/em> in this sense, will make you morally strong. Conservative psychologist Jordan Peterson asserts these values when he discusses the 12 rules for life. For instance, ‘standing straight<\/em>,’ or not letting ‘-your children do anything that makes you dislike them.’\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

As a means to prepare young people for the tough world, physical punishment teaches that straying from a moral path brings pain. While it keeps children in line, the strict father rewards loyalty, believing that spoiled children lack the discipline and values needed for independence.<\/p>\n

As many of us may recognise though, it is seldom the case that rich conservatives live up to the ideal. Often in wealthy households, ‘The Nanny’ cares for the kids, allowing them to grow spoiled. In the UK, these young people become entitled hooligans like The Bullingdon Club<\/a>, where trashing<\/em> extended from the dorm to the local restaurant without recourse. This is because people seldom live up to the ideal psychological prototypes in their mind, rather we tend to aspire to them.<\/p>\n

Moral Weakness – Man over Nature<\/h2>\n

As of March 2024, an estimated 14 million viewers watch The Joe Rogan Experience<\/em>. A common folk theory internalised by Joe is one that’s been doing the rounds for years now, a quote attributed to Michael Hopf that reads:<\/p>\n

\u00a0\u201cHard times create strong men. Strong men create good times. Good times create weak men. And, weak men create hard times.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n

Forgoing the contradictions of Tump’s strong man<\/em> legacy prolonging hard times<\/em>, my intention is to highlight how this frame maps onto the strict father morality. The strong man here promises to create good times. The statement attributes to this figure heroism, stomping out the permissive characters that lead to weak men. This statement tells men today the reason they are failing is because there are weak leaders in positions of power making hard times. The super rich have groomed believers into what Lakoff calls the Broligarchy<\/em><\/a>, exploiting the fears of men and hustling them onto courses promising to shape their character.<\/p>\n

Pivotally, Bro culture and the Man-O-sphere have largely been exercised to the authoritarian’s advantage, praying on the insecure vulnerabilities of men on the fringes. This group have been spurred into believing that to be a strong man is to be physically dominant, indignant and repressive to any emotion save rage\u00a0<\/em>or\u00a0anger.<\/em><\/p>\n

Man over Woman – “Your body my choice.”<\/em><\/h2>\n

Another indisputable frame was the superiority of man over woman. When Kamala Harris stepped up to replace Biden’s run for office, Kamala leaned hard into the liberal woman’s vote.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

In Strict Father worldview, men are superior to women and children, who must seek their absolute authority on decisions.\u00a0Far-right fascists like Nick Fuentes were positively gleeful about Trump’s victory. Online hate and harassment spiked after the election, a firm indication of the man over woman <\/em>sentiment.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a> The Institute for Strategic Dialogue<\/em> reported<\/a> a rise in volume for statements like “Repel the 19th”<\/em> (women’s voting rights) and “Your body my choice” – <\/em>a 4600% increase.<\/p>\n

Rich Over Poor<\/h2>\n

Predictably, the Democrat’s lean to the right failed. As they lick their wounds and learn the wrong lessons, swathes of unheard voices continue to make demands. They demand affordable housing, secure employment, fair wages, universal medical care free at the point of service, a cap on inflation and notably an end to war and the Palestinian genocide.<\/p>\n

But here is where Dems and Republicans find solidarity, that both parties are subsidised by the wealthy oligarchic class. This is perhaps the most tragic part of the Strict Father model, that states successful people have earned their right to be free of market discipline. That they are good and moral and do not deserve to feel the burdens of ‘taxation’. The rich in their view should have a tax relief, while the poor need to tighten their belts.<\/p>\n

The Democrats could have chosen Bernie Sanders, who inspired a movement in its own right, one that spoke about to grievances of the poor. Bernie made a tactical decision to join Biden and urge the Democrats to the left. In the end, the Democrat’s liberal, middle-of-the-road offer inspired nobody and paved the way to Trump’s victory. What happens from here is anyone’s guess, (mine would be some kind of authoritarian kleptocracy.) But if the rhetoric is to be believed, Trumps 2nd term promises to be a punitive and authoritarian tenure that won’t likely concede another voting defeat without a fight. The question now is will we fight for liberal democracy? Is it worth saving? Will we keep our heads bowed as our rights and freedoms are torn apart? Or will we demand and fight for something better?<\/p>\n

I am hopeful, as always, there is a fight in us for a better, more imaginative world of patience, empathy and nurturance.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
