\"\"It’s 1995, and McDonald’s is running a competition for kids in my town. The idea was simple: draw what you think an alien might look like. At 11 years old, I was crazy about aliens and drawing the classic xenomorph all the time. Drawing aliens was, in fact, one of my earliest explorations in my creativity and identity. I entered the competition and won a box-set of dinosaurs…which was a little confusing. But, at the time, what mattered to me more than the gift was the recognition.<\/p>\n

Somebody saw my work and liked it enough to say ‘this kid should win the prize.’ They liked my style, they liked my vision, and I felt seen. But what they probably didn’t see, and what people seldom understand, is that this is not a talent that came from nowhere. Like every skill, it takes time to craft, and more than anything, staying consistent is essential to furthering your development.<\/p>\n

Creativity and Identity: Working to Strengths AND Weaknesses<\/h2>\n

Here’s what I wish somebody had told me years ago, before I was well into this journey. Creativity and identity are one and the same. And when you are forging a creative identity, you’re not\u00a0<\/em>trying to be the best artist in the world – you’re trying to be the best artist you can be – you’re shaping\u00a0your\u00a0<\/em>style. You don’t want somebody to look at your craft and say – “oh, amazing, who did it?”<\/em> No! You want somebody to see your work and say “that’s clearly a [dear reader’s] piece.”\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

Style is what sets you apart. When we experience art, there is often something distinctive in the quality that allows us to say: “That’s a Roald Dahl piece.”<\/em> or “that’s a Picasso,”\u00a0 <\/em>or “that sounds like David Bowie,” <\/em>or “that reads like Sylvia Plath.” <\/em>Getting in touch with that inner voice, that visual style, that specific sound, is not simply about weeding out the imperfections. It’s about working on your strengths and draping the imperfections along for the ride.<\/p>\n

Creativity and Identity; a Chicken\/Egg Problem<\/h2>\n

Thinking back to being young, I would watch cartoons on TV and spend a lot of time trying to draw them. Mostly, I’d aim for the simple stuff. I remember thinking that I wanted to make cartoons. For me, boredom was the big instigator that forced the hand of my creativity. I would do\u00a0anything\u00a0<\/em>but be bored and do\u00a0nothing. <\/em>I would dig out my grandfather’s old car manuals and take time trying to draw the intricate engine parts and the curving chassis.<\/p>\n

Without a doubt boredom instigates a creative personality, and that’s my strong opinion. Boredom is the crucial ingredient. But the other ingredient is the resources. Back then, I didn’t have a lot available to me. There were pens and bits of paper – sometimes not even paper. So I would cut newspapers apart and make things from papier-m\u00e2ch\u00e9. Some kids would rather play football and go on to be great sports personalities. Others would use that car manual as a means to understanding engineering. What is it about our personal identities that allow us to lean one way or the other with our interests?<\/p>\n

Upbringing is a big one. I was never deterred from drawing or making art – but I wasn’t exactly encouraged – such things were not seen as leading towards what was termed a real job. <\/em>Your place of birth can shape your attitude towards your craft, either economically or otherwise – we internalise our messages.<\/p>\n

Having a Tenacious Identity<\/h2>\n

It’s 1997 – I’m getting too old to play with action figures and I started reading books with a more concentrated awareness. I had a dot-matrix printer and a cheap computer which just about ran Windows 95 on it – which means I now had a new creative resource at my disposal.<\/p>\n

I kept drawing and painting – my love for the craft will not die. But more than anything, I wanted to see my illustrations come to life. I wanted so badly to create something animate, a world that was living, a place with stakes, consequences, villains and heroes. Naturally, the only way I saw to do this was through writing. For a while, I had a camera, but when it broke I was left with only the white page and an endless flow of incoherent ideas. I had some help here and there. There was the much appreciated advice of a local author who wrote about his adventures in South Africa. His guidance was a treasure for me – and I learned quickly from him. Yet, despite his encouragement, I came to realise that I wasn’t ready. Or at least, that is what I believed.<\/p>\n

So I put in the work. I sat and wrote and wrote and wrote. I was a tenacious spirit, even though what I wrote was mostly garbage. It was the frantic attempt to hash out something that would hit a big word count. Because the higher the word count, the more professional I was…or at least, that is what I believed.<\/p>\n

Creativity Without Guidance<\/h2>\n

Here’s what I wish somebody had told me years ago, when I was well into this journey – not every creation fits to all media. Some books simply don’t work in the medium of the film, and some films simply don’t belong in theatre, and some scripts don’t work as a comic book – and no comic book can work as a radio drama. You must shape your creative output to the correct medium and think ahead with a good rationale. You must know why –\u00a0<\/em>why it should be a book. Why should it be a film? Why the comic? Why the theatre? Creativity without guidance is such a loss of your potential, such a loss of time going down a long path, only to reach a dead end.<\/p>\n

When you understand what it is you wish to express, you will get a better idea of how best to express it. But before that, you need to dig deep.<\/p>\n

What your Creativity and Identity Have in Common<\/strong><\/h2>\n

\"\"<\/a>It’s 2014 and I just finished my Masters Degree in English Literature and Linguistics. Moreover, I buried my nose in book-after-book, trying to research and find inspiration. I wanted to write the perfect science fiction novel. To say it flopped is an understatement. I self published a brick of a book, again trapped in the pattern of more spectacle, more words – and no audience to read it. I was devastated. I had tried so hard, believed so thoroughly that this was my calling. After some time, I realised that I had come at the industry backwards. I was learning the craft of my art – but not the art that mattered – business. Now, everything I had come to believe about myself had been challenged and utterly submerged in defeat. And I decided, once again, that I simply wasn’t ready. So I painfully shelved the book.<\/p>\n

The pattern emerging was clear. I was putting a whole lot of steam and ambition into the engine, but the gears were not set. I had not done the groundwork first. And this was something about my personality I knew I had to change. My attitude to business was sour, with so many associations and overlaps of besuited marketing types, ready to pick clean your creativity before tossing your bones aside. At least…that is what I believed, a belief that was not entirely unjust in this case, but a hindrance all the same.<\/p>\n

The Tapestry of Mastery<\/h2>\n

\"\"<\/a>It’s 2017 – I’m holding my daughter in my arms. Her name is Lena and for the first time in my life I have something meaningful and precious to care for. As I whispered promises and parental affections to her, I realise that I need a new path. It would be years of reflection before I could return to writing. I can see the problems and imperfections in my work – but unlike before, now I am open to them. It’s not the best it can be, I will say – it’s the best I can make it. To keep going over it and correcting it is again a waste of time. Rolling in the muck is no way of getting clean. We are obliged at some point to run with what we have and make the best of it – or let it go.<\/p>\n

And I have never been one to simply let go.<\/p>\n

Master your craft! The tapestry of creativity is deeply intwined into you. To let it die will not please your creative spirit. You need to find a way to keep the candle burning, no matter how humble, no matter how dim. Feed the fire and never let it out – because to be defeated and to surrender will make you bitter and resentful.<\/p>\n

It’s 2022 – I’ve dusted off the book and I’m ready to start again. I know it will be painful, but the time to reflect has been beneficial. Once again I feel ready.<\/p>\n

Your Path<\/h2>\n

It’s never straight forward. You have to explore it. But if I’ve learned anything it is this – learn from others! Have a mentor to teach you – it will save you so much time and keep you on track. Today, I know what I want, but to get there took many falls and injurious traps. You must treat your creative spirit as you would treat your personal health and wellbeing.<\/p>\n

To quote Carl Jung:<\/p>\n

\u201cWe would do well\u2026 to think of the creative process as a living thing implanted in the human psyche.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

It’s 2024. I’m 40 years old and I’m still telling myself I can create my vision and make it real. I am still doing the work, but now with a lot more experience and a little more consciousness. When it comes to the Jungian living, human psyche of one’s creative spirit – I think I can agree with that assessment. The creative process is a living thing – and everything that lives must be nourished.
